8 Mar: Toledo Central Catholic Spring Tournament Wrestlers from Michigan and Ohio braved the snow storm and competed at the Toledo Central Catholic Spring Tournament! See award photos here,   see wrestling photos here. Thanks to all of those who volunteered see some folks here. Experience was gained, fun was had, and good sportsmanship was shown!
7 Mar: GTWCA All-Star Meet  Nick Garcia 103-Clay, Dan Cook 112-CCHS, Scott Fuller 119-Waite, Aaron Cook 125-CCHS, Jordan Duckett 130-CCHS, Aaron Dietsch 135-SFS, Alex Herrick 140-Waite, Mark Orth 145-Clay, Joe Janke 152-SFS, Tyler Derr 160-Waite, Mike Nino 171-CCHS, Jake Henderson 189-CCHS, Dave Pickerel 215-CCHS, Darnell Green-Williams 285-Woodward were All-Stars! The Toledo City League all-stars were 2-0 on the evening, defeating both the Surburan Lakes League (SLL) and the North West Ohio Athletic League (NWOAL) all-stars in dual meet competition! 28 Feb: OHSAA State Tournament Dan Cook and Dave Pickerel represent Toledo Central Catholic at the Division II Ohio High School Athletic Association's State wrestling tournament. In 1st round action Sophomore Dan Cook was defeated (by fall 1:15) by Junior David Taylor (43-0) of St. Paris Graham. Dan's opponent was a formidable one ...  a two-time state champion and Cadet National Champion.  In consolation round action, Sophomore Dan Cook was defeated by Senior Brandon Voss (41-10) of Canal Winchester. Congratulations Dan on a strong wrestling season!  In preliminary round competition Junior Dave Pickerel (39-3) defeated Junior Nick Thompson (33-13) from Tallmadge by a score of 4-2.  In championship quarterfinal action Dave was narrowly defeated, 7-6, by Junior Branko Busick (38-1) of Steubenville. In the 2nd consolation round Dave tangled with Senior Justin Gidcumb (43-4) of New Concord John Glenn and was defeated by a score of 3-1.  Dave completes his Junior wrestling season with a record of 39-5. see all images here  See Division II results here 

25-28 Feb: BCSN Sports Rap BCSN Sports Rap Features Central Catholic Wrestling.  Coach Naufel, Dan Cook and Dave Pickerel represent CCHS and the wrestling program while talking to Tom Cole, the Coach.  See them on BCSN at: 11pm Mon, 7am & 5:30pm Tues, noon Wed, or 4:30am Sat. 23/23 Feb: Division II District Championships The Irish of Toledo Central Catholic qualified eight wrestlers to the district championships held at Fostoria High School. The Fostoria District proved to be a very solid one as CCHS qualifed two individuals: Dan Cook (112) and David Pickerel (215) to the State Tournament. Mike Nino(171) and Jacob Henderson (189) placed fifth and are alternates for a state tournament birth. 16 Feb: Division II Sectionals The Division II Sectional tournament at Wauseon High School featured 10 teams, four of which were league champions the week prior: Eastwood, Toledo Central Catholic, Maumee, &  Napoleon won their respective leagues. A fifth team, Bryan,  took home runner-up honors at their league meet.  Toledo Central Catholic qualified eight wrerstlers to the district meet and had three alternates. Jordan Duckett (130), Brad Mossing (152), and Dave Pickerel (215) were Sectional Champs! Aaron Cook (125), Mike Nino (171), and Jake Henderson (189) placed 2nd, Zach Sullivan (103) & Dan Cook (112) placed 3rd. Jake Wawrzyniak (119), DJ Beauch (145), and Vincenzo Cardone (160) were alternates by placing 5th. Tony Martin (145) placed 6th.  Toledo Central Catholic placed 2nd as a team, scoring 194 points behind the Team Champion Pemberville Eastwood who scored 208.5 points. 9 Feb: Toledo City League Championships Robbie Franks and Luke Holzhauer were honored as members of the TCL All-Academic Team! All fourteen members of the CCHS wrestling squad placed in the Toledo City League Tournament and the Irish finished as the Team Champions scoring 253 points! The runnerup Oregon Clay Eagles scored 220 points. St. John's, Start & St. Francis rounded out the top five.  The Irish had Five City Champs: Dan Cook, Jordan Duckett, Mike Nino, Jake Henderson, and Dave Pickerel were crowned as individual champions of their respective weight classes! Aaron Cook & DJ Beauch placed 2nd, Tony Martin & Brad Mossing placed 3rd. Vincenzo Cardone placed 4th, Zach Sullivan & Nico Covarrubias placed 5th, Chris Roth & Luke Holzhauer placed 6th. CCHS Senior 171 lb Michael Nino was awarded the Kevin Lydy award as the most outstanding wrestler of the tournament!  See Blade Article, all-academic team photos, podium award winners

8 Feb: Junior Varsity League Championship  Ten members of the Irish Junior Varsity wrestling squad competed in the Toledo City League championships and earned team runner-up honors. Oregon Clay outdistanced the rest of the field. St. Francis, Start, & Whitmer rounded out the top five. Ronnie Sanner & Jake Staebler were crowned as City Champs! Cory Dutkiewicz, Kyle Roberts, Kevin McCabe finished 2nd. Jason Mossing & Craig Naufel finished 3rd. Tom Keogh placed 4th. Congratulations on a fine Junior Varsity wrestling season!! See photos of all place winners here.
2 Feb: Eastwood Duals CCHS competed in the Eastwood Duals Tournament and finished the day as team runner-ups going 4-1 in dual meets completing their dual meet season with a 16-2 record. The squad was outpointed by a strong Eastwood team 36-24 in the championship final. Other teams competing were: Findlay, Tiffin Columbian, Dublin Scioto, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, Wapakoneta, Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, Toledo Waite, Gahanna Lincoln. photos
2 Feb: Junior Varsity Clay Invitational The Junior Varsity wrestlers competed at the Clay Invitational and placed 5th out of the field of twenty teams. Jake Staebler remained undefeated on the season and earned a Championship.  Tom Keogh, Jake Roman & Ronnie Sanner placed third in thier respective weight divisions. photos

23 Jan: Varsity Tri-match The Varsity wrestling team traveled to Genoa for dual meet competition with Sandusky St. Mary's and Genoa improving their season record to 12-1. The opening round found the Rock Solid Irish pitted against traditional Division III state power Sandusky St. Mary's. There was no lack of excitement, for the third time in the last three weeks a CCHS dual meet was decided by the last individual bout. Toledo Central Catholic triumphed, out-pointing Sandusky SMCC by a score of 38-33.  In the final round of competition the Irish defeated Genoa by a score of 60-15.  Congratulations!  See Toledo Blade PIX Gallary featuring CCHS's own DJ Beauch

19/20 Jan: Varsity Catholic Invitational Tournament The Irish traveled to Cincinnati Elder and placed fifth out of a field of twenty seven Catholic High Schools from across the State of Ohio. Michael Nino was crowned the Champion at 171lbs by pinning his opponent in the final! Other finalists for CCHS were Dan Cook at 112lbs and Dave Pickerel at 215lbs. Jordan Duckett (130) and Jacob Henderson (189) placed third! Congratulations Irish!  results
19 Jan: Junior Varsity @ Lake Invitational Toledo Central Catholic traveled to Lake High School and came home the Team Champions! The Irish scored 153 team points to out distance Bowling Green who scored 115.5 points. Other teams competing in the field of eighteen teams were: Swanton, Freemont Ross, Genoa, Whitmer, Northview, St. John's, Elmwood, Maumee, Start, Otsego, Anthony Wayne, Lake, Cardinal Stritch, Rossford, Toledo Christian & Northwood.  Jason Mossing, Tony Martin, & Jake Staebler were individual Champs at their respective weights. Jake Roman placed third. Cory Dutkiewicz, Chris Roth, placed 4th, Tom Keogh,Ronnie Sanner & Kelvin Lawrence placed 6th.

16 Jan: Varsity Dual Meet with Toledo St. John's Jesuit  Four senior wrestlers were honored prior to the match: Aaron Cook, Michael Nino, Luke Holzhauer, & Robbie Franks. The Irish rasied their season dual meet record to 10-1, capturing 11 of 14 individual matches, scoring bonus points in eight of those eleven victories! The final score was 51-10. Our apologies go out to those who attended, as the individual records for the SJJ wrestlers shown in the program and announced over the PA were not current. 13 Jan: In Their Words Blade Article  Coach Doc Leffler discusses wrestling history, philosophy, and the future in this Toledo Blade article. Doc also explains how he got the nickname 'Doc'.
12 Jan: Varsity tri-meet with Sandusky Perkins and Olmsted Falls. The Irish brought their season dual meet record to 9-1 by defeating Sandusky Perkins 38-19 and a come from behind victory to defeat Olmsted Falls by a score of 36-34! 9 Jan: Varsity trimeet with Toledo Start and Oregon Clay. The Irish outpointed the Spartans 53-25. A solid and balanced Oregon Clay team outpointed the Irish by a score of 41-34 in an exciting dual meet whose outcome was determined by the last individual match. Congratulations go to the Clay Eagles Wrestling Program on their victory. The Irish brought their season dual meet record to 7-1.
5 Jan: Junior Varsity Toledo Start Invitational  The Junior Varsity Irish traveled to Toledo Start and placed 3rd as a team in the 16 team field. Jason Mossing (130) & Jake Staebler (189) were individual Champions!.  Jake Staebler was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler! Placing 2nd was Cory Dutkiewicz (119) & Kevin McCabe (135). Kyle Roberts (125), Jake Roman (152), Tom Keogh (160) and Ronnie Sanner (171) placed fourth.
5 Jan: Varsity Piloseno Duals The Irish were crowned as team champions going 5-0 in dual meets defeating a tough Springport Michigan squad 36-33 in the finals! Congratulations! Click on the picture on the left to see a full size version of the team with the Champioship hardware!
3 Jan: Varsity Dual meet with Toledo St. Francis  The Irish traveled three miles west on Bancroft St. to compete with St Francis in thier season opening dual meet. CCHS defeated the Knights by outpointing them by a score of 41-30 and scoring team points in eight of the fourteen weight divisions. Scoring team points for the Irish were: DJ Beauch, Brad Mossing, Mike Nino, Dave Pickerel, Dan Cook, Aaron Cook, and Jordan Duckett.

28-29 Dec: Varsity Wendy's Classic Tiffin Columbian The Irish traveled to Tiffin for the Wendy's Invitational and finished as the Team Champions scoring 204 points! Hilliard Darby finished 2nd with 182 points. Other teams competing in the twenty-one team field were: Toledo St.Francis, Fremont Ross, Otsego, Maumee, Madison, Tiffin Columbian, Elida, Mohawk, Lancaster, Upper Sandusky, Canal Winchester, Margaretta, Western Reserve, Fostoria, Newark, Hopewell-Loudon, Woodmore, Toledo Whitmer, Van Buren. Winning Championships for the Irish were: Dan Cook, Aaron Cook, Michael Nino, and Dave Pickerel. Jake Henderson finish 3rd, Nico Covarrubias and D.J. Beauch finished 4th. 29 Dec: Junior Varsity Sylvania Northview Invitational Twelve Junior Varsity grapplers traveled to Sylvania and Toledo Central Catholic finished 3rd out of the nine team field. Oak Harbor and Northview captured the top two team honors. Other teams competing were: Napoleon, Woodmore, Bowsher, Delphos-Jefferson, and Otsego. Chris Roth (119), Vincenzo Cardone (171), and Jake Staebler (189) were Champions of their weight classes. Jason Mossing (130) and Ronnie Sinner(171) placed 2nd, Kyle Roberts (125), Jake Roman (160) finished 3rd.

28 Dec: Junior Varsity St. John's Invitational Twelve Junior Varsity grapplers traveled across town to Toledo St. John's and finished 3rd out of the eleven team field. Oregon Clay finished as team Champs and Fishers Indiana took home the runner-up honors. Other teams competing were: Perrysburg, Swanton, Maumee, Toledo Start, Toledo St. Francis, Lake, Sylvania Southview, and Tol. St. John's. Chris Roth (119), Jason Mossing (130), Vincenzo Cardone (171), and Jake Staebler (189) were Champions of their weight classes. Jake Roman (160) was runner-up. Cory Dutkiewicz (119) and Tom Keogh (160) placed 3rd and Zach Sullivan (103) placed 4th. 

15 Dec: Fremont St. Joe Tourny - Junior Varsity  The Junior Varsity opened their season in Fremont each of the team members wrestled at least two matches before the snow rolled in!

14-15 Dec: Sylvania Southview Invitational Toledo Central Catholic opened their season as team runner-ups in a sixteen team field at Sylvania Southview. The Irish finished with 204.5 points while Napoleon took the team championship with 210.5 points. Other teams competing were: Oregon Clay, Findlay, Toledo Start, Genoa, Lakewood St. Edwards, Evergreen, Sylvania Southview, Delphos Jefferson, Hicksville, Toledo Libbey, Port Clinton, Sylvania Northview, Northwood. Dan Cook, Michael Nino, and Dave Pickerel finished on top of the podium, Aaron Cook, Nico Covarrubias finished 2nd, DJ Beauch, Brad Mossing placed 3rd, Jacob Henderson placed 4th, Jordan Duckett, Luke Holzhauer finished 5th. Coach Naufel said "Not a bad start to our season, we've got plenty of work ahead of us".

8 Dec: Andy Bates Memorial Tourny Nine members of the Freshmen team opened their season at Maumee High School. As a team, the Irish finished 3rd out of the field of eighteen teams. Brandon Lillibridge finished 2nd at 135lbs, Zach Sullivan, Cory Dutkiewicz, finished 3rd at 103 & 119lbs respectively.  

30 Nov/1 Dec: Unity Camp 

Introducing a new chapter in CCHS Wrestling ...  Coach Rock SolidNaufel, Doc Leffler and the rest of the coaching staff leads the team into Unity Camp Weekend.  This year's motto is "Working to be ROCK SOLID"  Rock Solid in the classroom, with our families, in the community, spiritually, and on the mat!  The wrestlers practiced, gathered for a meal, received preseason achievement awards, watched a movie, discussed individual and team goals, practiced again, had a "meet the team" meeting, and finished with Mass celebrated by Father Hartigan!  The Irish are energized and ready to begin the 2007-2008 season!  Congratulations to all 40 Point Club Members:  Jake Staebler, Brandon Lillibridge, Aaron Cook, Nico Covarrubias, Cory Dutkiewicz, Brad Mossing, Chris Roth, Craig Naufel, Daniel Cook, Jake Roman, Michael Nino.

 The Irish of Toledo Central Catholic High School look forward to an action packed wrestling season! Coach Naufel says “We are glad to have somebody with Doc’s wrestling wisdom and proven track record of building champions on our staff, he relates so well with our student-athletes!"

The Irish will be led by returning state placer Dave Pickerel and returning state qualifier Michael Nino. These guys will be flanked by ten additional returning varsity letter winners and a host of incoming freshmen with significant wrestling experience.

The squad has kept busy in the off-season with lots of Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling opportunities: Dave Pickerel was a member of the Ohio Falcons team and traveled to Orlando, Florida to participate in the 2007 Disney Duals.  Jake Staebler and Michael Nino capped their off-season wrestling with a trip to Knoxville, Tennessee  for the Junior Olympics while Dan Cook, Jake Wawrzyniak, Brad Mossing and Vincenzo Cardone made the trek out to Fargo, North Dakota for the Asics Cadet Nationals competition. Congratulations to all who participated!

In addition to wrestling, much of the squad participated in an off-season conditioning program during the summer months and are currently enjoying the benefits of early morning lifting and conditioning workouts!

We are also excited to announce the Junior Rocks Wrestling Program for 5th thru 8th grade boys.  This program is led by Coaches Tony Vaughn and John Mossing with additional support by Coaches Vince Cardone and Mike Cook.  The CCHS Coaches look forward to sharing insights with the Junior Rocks' Wrestlers.
