3/7/09 72nd Annual OHSAA State Championship - Summary  It was a busy and productive weekend at the state wrestling tournament; six state qualifiers, twenty-four matches, four state placers, a state finalist, and a fourth overall division II team finish!

 Dan Cook, Jake Henderson, Dave Pickerel, Vincenzo Cardone represent Toledo Central Catholic's 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd State place winners! Toledo Central Catholic was on the leader board all weekend, out of 175 division II schools the IRISH finish in 4th place as a team!  3/7/09 OHSAA Championship Finals - The weekend completed with an absolute battle involving Senior Dave Pickerel and undefeated projected state champ Tyler Houska of Medina Highland. The match was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation with Pickerel pushing the action. At the end of four periods it was still tied. In first of two 30 second stanzas, Dave chose down and was unable to escape.  Next, Houska chose bottom and Pickerel was riding. With eleven seconds left in the period Dave was called for pushing his opponent out of bounds.  Houska was awarded a point, much to the displeasure of the 14,000+ crowd. 3/7/09 OHSAA Championships - Consolation Finals The Irish were only able to secure one victory in final two consolation rounds.  In the consolation semifinal Dan, Jake and Vincenzo were each defeated and were sent to the 5th place consolation final. In the consolation final, Dan Cook (35-12) was defeated by Senior Alex Minnard of Lancaster Fairless and finished his Junior year placing 6th in the state earning All-State honors.  Junior Jake Henderson (38-7) defeated Senior Ashton Brown (54-9) of Pemberville Eastwood 3-2. Junior Vincenzo Cardone (35-8) was defeated by Senior Ray Spence (52-6) of Amanda-Clearcreek. See Photos here 

3/6/09 OHSAA State Championships - Semifinals & Consi-Quarterfinals  Of Toledo Central Catholic's three semifinalists ... Dave Pickerel emerged as a State Finalist.  Dave defeated previously undefeated Senior Branko Busick now 45-1 in convincing fashion.  Dan Cook and Jake Henderson suffered defeats and were sent to the consolation bracket. In one of the final bouts of the evening Vincenzo Cardone defeated Danny Quallich of Chillicothe in an ultimate tie breaker by a score of 3-2. Dan, Jake, Vincenzo will wrestle two more times in a quest for third place. See photos here, See 3/7/09 Blade Article

3/6/09 OHSAA Consolation Round 2 - Jordan Duckett and Vincenzo Cardone competed in consolation round action. Jordan finished his Senior year and high school career in a fierce  battle with  Evan Stortz of Springfield Shawnee. The match ended by the score of 3-2 in the third overtime period. As usual, Jordan represented himself and Toledo Central Catholic extremely well! Vincenzo also competed in multi-overtime match and when the dust cleared was the victor. Vincenzo sealed a state placement slot and competes Friday evening to further improve his position. 3/6/09 OHSAA State Championships - Quarterfinals  Four Irish competed in quarterfinal action and three of them advance to the championship semifinal this evening!  Dan Cook defeated Senior and two time state placer Chandler Jones by a score of 2-0, Jake Henderson defeated Travis McIntosh of Miami Trace 4-3; Dave Pickerel defeated Nick Thompson of Tallmadge by a score of 1-0; Dan, Jake, and Dave have ensured themselves a placement in these State Championships! Vincenzo Cardone was edged out in overtime by Ian Jones. Jordan Duckett and Vincenzo will compete this afternoon at 1:00pm  See photos here

3/5/09 - OHSAA State Tournament Day 1 - The Irish were victorious in four of six matches in first round championship action! Junior Dan Cook (34-9) decsioned Andrew Brown (37-6) of Tallmadge 4-2 in overtime. At 130lbs Jordan Duckett (31-7) was defeated by Lance Zappitella (44-5) of Conneaut. Sophomore DJ Beauch (32-6) was defeated by Senior Michael Slaga (38-5) of Rayland Buckeye Local by a score of 5-2.Junior Jake Henderson (36-5) defeated John Sill (34-10) of Perry by a score of 6-0. At 215 lbs Dave Pickerel (26-5) won by technical fall over Spencer Shaw (33-12) of Washington Court House 16-0. Junior Vincenzo Cardone (33-5) out pointed John Eckroth (32-14) of Cadiz Harrison Central 4-3. In the first consolation round Senior Jordan Duckett won by technical fall over Chris Miller from Greenville 16-0. DJ Beauch's stellar Sophomore season ended a bit earlier than he had hoped. He was defeated by Matt Fee of Mentor Lake Catholic in consolation action. At the end of day one, Toledo Central Catholic finishes in 4th position on the Division II leader board! 3/1/09 - Toledo Central Catholic Spring Tournament - ~300 wrestlers across six age divisions and sixy-four weight classes participated in the annual spring tournament. Wrestlers from across OH, MI and even NY participated in this event. In addition to providing wrestling opportunities in a top notch facility, this tournament acts as a fund raiser for the Junior Rock & CCHS wrestling programs. 2/28/09 - District Championships - Day Two The Irish advance six wrestlers to the State Championships! Dan Cook, Jordan Duckett, DJ Beauch, Jake Henderson, Dave Pickerel, and Vincenzo Cardone each placed in the top four of their respective weight divisions! Brad Mossing placed 6th. As a team, Toledo Central Catholic finished with 122.5 points just three points behind the district champions from Parma Padua. Jake Henderson was a district champion! Of the 175 division II wrestling schools in Ohio, there were only 4 others who qualified 6 or more participants.  see results here see photos here

2/27/09 - District Championships - Day one The Irish of Toledo Central Catholic brought eleven wrestlers to Fostoria OH with a goal of advancing to the State Championships. After Day one of district competition nine of those wrestlers advance to day two. Dan Cook, Jordan Duckett, DJ Beauch, Jake Henderson, Vincenzo Cardone guaranteed themselves district placement but need to win an additional match out of the next two to advance to the State Tournament. Brian Elden, Brad Mossing, Tony Martin, Dave Pickerel need to win three straight matches to advance.  As a Team the Irish finished the day in second place out of the 40+ district teams see results here  see photos here

2/21/09 - Sectional Championships Toledo Central Catholic advances twelve wrestlers to the DII District Championships in Fostoria OH. The Irish topped the field out-pointing the team runner-ups by 71 points. Five of the twelve district qualifiers were crowned as Champions:  Jordan Duckett, DJ Beauch, Jake Henderson, Dave Pickerel, Vincenzo Cardone all stood at the top of the podium!  Congratulations! 2/14/09 - Toledo City League Championships This season the Irish were eleven points better than in 2008. However having four individual Champions, fourteen place winners and scoring 264 points wasn't enough to repeat as Toledo City League Team Champions. CCHS took home the team runner-up honors behind the Eagles of Oregon Clay.  DJ Beauch, Jake Henderson, Dave Pickerel, and Vincenzo Cardone were all crowned as individual champions! Dave Pickerel collected his 3rd league title and Jake Henderson secured his 2nd TCL Championship! 2/13/09 - Junior Varsity Toledo City League Championships - The Irish traveled to Rogers High School and competed in the TCL Junior Varsity Championships and came home with the Team Runners-up honors! Jake Venia, Zach Sullivan, Jason Mossing, Tom Keogh, and Levi Pickerel were crowned as individual Champions! Congratulations to Oregon Clay on winning the team Championship. See Photos here

2/7/09 - Varsity Eastwood Duals - Toledo Central Catholic traveled to Pemberville for the Eastwood duals. The Irish outpointed Eastwood in the Championship finals 55-10. CCHS brought their season dual meet record to 13-1 Senior David Pickerel secured his 100th career win! see full resulthis s here. See Photos here2/7/09 - Clay Junior Varsity Invitational - Six wrestlers traveled to Oregon Clay to compete in the annual Junior Varsity invitational tournament. Tom Keogh and Levi Pickerel finished as idndivdual runners-up. See Photos here
2/7/09 - 5th thru 8th grade CYO championships - Ten Junior Rock wrestlers traveled to Hawkin Upper School in Chesterland OH for the 2009 CYO Diocesan Championships. Matt P was crowned as a Champion, the 2nd ever from Toledo! ColinK and AlexM finished 2nd. JimmyT and JoshM finished 4th. DavidG finished 5th and KevinK placed 6th. The guys wrapped up their CYO season by competing in thirty-four matches against very good competition with fifteen victories.  See Photos Here

2/4/09 - Dave Pickerel signs with Tiffin University - On Wednesday Feb 4th Dave Pickerel was one of six CCHS student-athletes to sign national Letters of intent on national signing day! Dave has earned himself a full-ride football scholarship to Tiffin University and is looking to contribute at the linebaker position in the 2009 season!  Currently Dave is focused on completing his high school academic and athletic endeavors! We wish Dave the best in taking full advantage of this opportunity at Tiffin University!  

1/31/09 -  Milan Junior Varsity Tourny - Toledo Central Catholic traveled north to Michigan to compete in the Milan Junior Varsity Tournament. The Irish brought home the sportsmanship trophy and crowned four individual Champions: Jake Venia, Brian Elden, Chris Roth, Levi Pickerel. This 99 page report dissects each of the fourteen weight classes in each of the three divisions identifying the individuals who will likely play a role at this year's state tournament. This year eight CCHS wrestlers gained the recognition of Mr Brakeman. See the report here.
1/24/09 - Senior Day & Dual Meet with Toledo St. Francis - The Irish celebrated Senior day and brought their season dual meet record to 8-1 by out pointing the Knights of St. Francis 46-19.  Jordan Duckett, Ali El-tatawy, Brad Mossing, and Dave Pickerel competed in their final home dual meet by leading the Irish in victory. A special gathering was held in honor of Coach Dick Wilson.  Alumni wrestlers and friends came from near and far, fun was had by all! See Photos Here   

1/17/09 - 48th Catholic Invitational Tournament - The Irish traveled to Newark, OH for the 48th annual CIT. Toledo Central Catholic finished 2nd in the 38 team field scoring 190.5 points. Individually Vincenzo Cardone was crowned as a CIT Champion! Other CCHS place winners were: Jordan Duckett and Dave Pickerel as runners-up; Brad Mossing and Jake Henderson placed 3rd; Dan Cook finished 4th; DJ Beauch and Ali El-Tatawy finished 5th.  All told, thirteen wrestlers competed in sixty-three matches and recorded forty-three victories! Congratulations also go to two area Champions: Josh Reindel and Kyle Gladieux of Oregon Cardinal Stritch.    See results here.  See Photos here

1/14/09 - Trimeet Toledo Start & Oregon Clay - The Junior Varsity and Varsity Squads traveled to Toledo Start for dual meets with Oregon Clay and Toledo Start. The Eagles of Oregon Clay handed CCHS their 1st dual meet loss of the season by outpointing the Irish 27-24. Each team won 7 individual matches. CCHS outpointed Toledo Start 72-6 bringing their season dual-meet record to 7-1 See photos here

1/07/09Dual Meet Competition with Toledo St. John's - The Junior Varsity and Varsity squads traveled across town to compete with the Titans of St. John's Jesuit. Eight Junior Varsity matches were contested. In Varsity action the Irish scored team points in 12 of the 14 weight divisions outpointing SJJ 62-12. Freshman Jake Venia wrestled his first Varsity matched and scored a victory by Fall! The squad brings their season dual meet record to 6-0 See photos here
01/06/09Mourning the Loss of Coach Dick Wilson - The wrestling community lost a great man, wrestler and coach in Dick Wilson ... Coach Wilson was an accomplished wrestler, teacher, and father. In addition to his ability to teach wrestling he was especially gifted at assisting wrestlers in their psychological preparation and building their self confidence. Obituary and guestbook. 1/03/09Toledo Central Catholic Piloseno Duals - Eight Varsity squads from Northern Ohio and SE Michigan competed in five dual matches each in this one day tournament. Toledo Central Catholic came home with the top honors! The 2008 MHSAA Division I State runners-up kicking mules of Bedford finished 2nd. 12/29-30/08 - 48th Annual Brecksville Holiday Tournament - Toledo Central Catholic finishes in 17th place in the team standings. Jake Henderson finished 4th, Dan Cook and Dave Pickerel finished 6th. 12/27/08Junior Varsity @ Sylvania Northview Invitational - The Toledo Central Catholic Junior Varsity squad traveled to Sylvania and came home with the top honors by scoring 200+ points. Oregon Clay took the team runner-up honors. Alex Padilla, Tom Keogh, Ronnie Sanner, Kelvin Lawrence and Levi Pickerel were crowned as Champions! 12/13/08 - Junior Varsity Whitmer Invitational - Members of the Junior Varsity squad competed in a field of nineteen teams and came home with the team runner-up honors behind Oregon Clay. Alex Padilla & Levi Pickerel took top honors in their respective weight classes. Jake Venia & Tom Koegh placed 3rd. Jason Mossing & Kelvin Lawrence placed 4th.  See Photos here12/06/08 - Andy Bates Memorial Freshman Tournament - Eight members of the CCHS Freshman team along with 21 other teams from NW Ohio competed in the tourny.  Alex Padilla was crowned Champion!  Jake Venia placed 3rd and Vicente Vielma took 4th! 12/12-13/08 - Sylvania Southview Invitational Tournament - After much anticipation and months of preparation the Toledo Central Catholic Varsity squad opened their season - participating in a field of fifteen teams at the 30th annual Sylvania Southview Invitational by breaking the team scoring record. Central Catholic competed in 45 matches, had 38 victories, 22 by fall, crowned eight champions, two individual runner-up's and a third place finisher. Jake Smith-Heshley, Dan Cook, Jordan Duckett, Nico Covarrubias, DJ Beauch, Ali El-Tatawy, Tony Martin, Vincenzo Cardone stood on the top of the podium for their individual weight classes! Brad Mossing had the most pins in the tournament. See all of the photos here12/04/08 - Royce Alger Visits CCHS - Alger is a two-time World Cup champion and silver medallist at the World Games.  A two-time national champion and three-time Big Ten champion at Iowa.

11/28/08 - Meet the Team - Coach Naufel introduced the wrestlers, coaches, and mat stats for the 2008-2009 wrestling program.  Doc Leffler shared expectations for the upcoming season. 11/14/08 - Moms Unity Session - While the wrestlers were celebrating their first night of practice the moms celebrated a night out! 

Football Season 2008 - Wrestling Tailgate Events - This fall the wrestlers and their families enjoyed supporting the CCHS football team!

Fall 2008 - 6am Workouts - In preparation for the season, Coach Naufel gave the wrestlers the opportunity to enjoy the morning air during their 6am running and lifting sessions

Summer 2008 - Morning Conditioning Sessions - In addition to plenty of off-season wrestling, the guys participated in morning strength and conditioning workouts.

Spring/Summer 2008 - Off-season Wrestling - Many of the wrestlers took advantage of off-season USA Wrestling opportunities by participating in the Foxfire and Lake Erie Wrestling Clubs.
